Re: The Research Paper: Thanks for the encouragement on the paper! It is coming right along, it is due on Friday at 6:30 p.m. I went ahead and took a vacation day from work on Friday so I can finish up writing and tie up any loose ends.
I am writing about the Writ of Habeas Corpus, our right to a guaranteed trial if arrested. Without it, our President has the authority to hold anyone indefinitely. Well, guess what happened recently? Good ol’ Bush got the Writ suspended! The conservatives point out that it only applies to illegal aliens deemed “enemy combatants”. Yeah, but it then goes on to say it applies to anyone deemed an “enemy combatant”. That could end up being anybody he feels is against him, couldn't it?
The Writ has been suspended before by Pres. Lincoln, and ignored once by Franklin Roosevelt during World War II. I intend to show by precedent that in both cases, it ended up being used against American citizens and that the potential is there now for Bush to abuse. (And you know he will). Not only that, but it is in violation of my country’s Constitutional and should be struck down right away.
I hate Bush. Here is a link to my favorite website:

Re: Syd – I don’t know whether Syd was kidding around when he wouldn’t play or sing. If he were kidding, he took the joke way too far. Plus the way he totally withdrew makes me think something was seriously wrong. He went for YEARS not working towards any goals in life other than painting…and destroyed most of that. After a certain point, he did not have any close friends or lovers, not that we know of anyway.
And he if could have, it seems he would have stepped forth eventually and said, “I did all that because I wanted to get out of the band. Those guys sucked and I was tired of them and I just wanted to chill out and paint. And I’m not real happy about those jerks using my story to get famous, either!!!!” _________________ http://www.planetbrenda.blogspot.com

Brenda,
As always, you make valid points.
If Syd really was just having a laugh at the expense of everyone else, then he never really delivered the punch line. He probably did suffer from some form of mental illness. Some of the stories I've encountered describe Syd after 1968-ish as having a speech disorder where he would jumble words up to the point where his sentences would have little meaning to anyone except those who were familiar with his weird new way of speaking. Phrases such as "I'm full of dust and guitars" spring to mind. Perhaps Syd was just babbling drug induced nonsense, but even those who spoke to him in the 1980's and 1990's, including members of his family, often described his speech as disjointed. I think he had given up the drugs by then, so he must have been suffering from some persistent psychological ailment, even if only minor.
By the way, thanks for the link to Angelica's site!
I must admit that I was a "fan" of Bush Jr when he was first elected. I say "fan" in inverted commas because I'm not American (I'm a Limey living in Australia) so I'm not that close to the situation except by virtue of the fact that the actions of American presidents affect the whole world. Obviously in the early days, he hadn't had time to actually make his mark, so nobody knew what lay ahead and it was easier to like him. I had total respect for him and sympathy for America as a whole when the awful events of 9/11 occurred.
But when Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld decided to invade Iraq, I couldn't believe the stupidity. Right from the start I didn't believe that Saddam's regime had anything to do with Al Qaeda. Awful as those two are, it was plain to see that they were political opposites and in all probability would never have anything to do with each other. Saddam, though no stranger to attrocities, presided over a secular government consisting of Sunnis, Kurds, Shiites and Christians (Tariq Aziz the foreign minister was one such Christian). Al Qaeda on the other hand are anything but secular. Those guys propose an Islamic Caliphate which would hardly embrace Christians or a secular dicatator such as Saddam for that matter.
So Bush is no longer on my Christmas card list and I was pleased to see Rumsfeld go. But having said that, I have no time for those people who tarnish all of America with the same brush. It's not fair when British or Australian newspapers rant on about the unconstitutional things "America" is doing. It's not "America" that's doing these things, it's the Bush administration. Most Americans I've encountered are decent hard-working people who DO care about what goes on in the world and DO care about the constitution being abused or amended to facilitate torture or detention without trial.
I think your research paper is going to be very interesting.
Changing the subject slightly, did you know that Elvis Presley once offered his services to President Nixon as a narcotics agent? Again, another charismatic character (Elvis I mean, not President Nixon).
Have you read any biographies about Jim Morrison? I think he too falls into our charismatic category. One of the most interesting biographies I've ever read was the Morrison biography "No One Here Gets Out Alive".
And you thought your topics jump around! |

HA! No I've never heard that one before! Well, he certainly would have been well qualified to serve as an agent, wouldn't he? He had lots of drug experience! That is too funny.
Nixon I guess I would define as "anti-charisma". When he attended Duke University as a law student, he lived in a big house near campus. Once I came along, it had been divided into small flats that anyone could rent and I lived in one for a short time. I never caught any "ghost of Nixon vibes" but it sure wasn't from a lack of trying! HAHAHA

Ah Morrison!
The enigma with the beautiful voice.
Syd was childlike
Ian was intense
Jim Morrison was a psychopath.
Seriously, I've always been kind of scared of him. I have read "No One Here Gets Out Alive" but it has been YEARS ago and I have forgotten many things. Definitely worth a trip to the library to read again and I think I will!
One thing about the book I remember though, was a story about Jim when he was a child, maybe 12 years old. He was riding on a sled with his brother and sister. Apparently it was a dangerous slope and the younger children got scared and Jim wouldn't get them get off the sled. Not only that but he was steering the sled right for a building. The little ones were screaming and Jim wasn't going to stop. If I remember correctly, Jim's Dad saved them from hitting the brick building. The little ones were hysterical and Jim was like "we were just having some fun!"
And there was something about Jim holding his younger brother down and smearing him with dog feces, but I don't remember the exact story. And Jim's adult antics are legendary. I think he was a psychopath and if he hadn't had his drugs, music, and poetry, he could have possibly been a danger to society.
But oh! That voice! Truly a gift from god.
Tomorrow is a 15 hour day for me, work all day and then class at night. I might not be around tomorrow but I'll catch you on Thursday for sure. I know you will have thought up something interesting for me to read!

Haha! Elvis certainly had no shortage of experience with drugs. The "narcotics agent" incident supposedly occured around 1971/72, by which time Elvis was going through more Demerol than a large hospital!
There were other strange but true incidents involving Mr Presley in the 1970's. Apparently he once saw some guys harrassing a gas station attendent. Being the good citizen, Elvis got out of his vehicle, adopted the karate stance and naturally the bad guys ran away. It might have helped that Elvis had his usual entourage of bodyguards with him at the time.

Perhaps Nixon's ghost was there but didn't have sufficient charisma to make it's presence felt !!
Now I have this image in my mind of a spectre floating around a large house, trying to tell people "I am not a crook". Heh heh, that crazy Nixon ghost.

Hmmm, yes, I know what you mean about Jimbo. I get the impression that he was a bit unpredictable, possibly in a violent kind of way. I think John Lennon was the same in that sense. Prone to spontaneous nastiness. Isn't it ironic that two icons of the era of love and peace happen to have had anger management issues. Not the placid hippies that we would expect.
In fact Syd was also prone to violent outbursts. His fiancee Gayla left him in the early 1970's because she couldn't stand it any longer. I hope other readers don't perceive that I'm committing heresy against Syd for saying this! On the contrary, I think it proves that Syd was flawed and therefore he was only human (not that this is an excuse for committing violence against other humans!). |

Syd Heresy? Nah, if he was violent sometimes, he was violent sometimes, no getting around it. And there is definite corroboration from other people that also witnessed Syd being violent. I remember from the "Crazy Diamond" biography there was something about one of his girlfriends asleep in his bed and he just threw her out on the floor. And several witnessed it.
I can just imagine Syd explaining it.
"Why'd you do it, Syd?"
"That's MY bed!"
As far as John Lennon, I've never heard much about him being violent. What kinds of ways was he violent? Like towards Yoko? Listening to Yoko can make me violent.
And he might not have been the only Beatle to be violent. All this scandal with Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. Of course everyone believes Paul McCartney! But there is part of me that wonders if she DOESN'T have something on him....either that or she's just plain crazy!
Class is now over! WOOT! I have the paper due by Friday evening and then I'm free until January! Except for working but that's all right. During our Thanksgiving holiday I am going to be painting. I keep telling people that and they ask "what are you going to paint?" but I don't paint realism. It'll be shapes and color, that's about all I know at this point! Maybe I will post it here if it turns out halfway decent.

John Lennon was violent towards Cynthia, the girlfriend who would later become his first wife. I found the following story...
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,8802-1774227,00.html
... in which Cynthia describes John hitting her across the face for dancing with his friend Stuart Sutcliffe...
"When I came out he was waiting with a dark look on his face. Before I could speak he raised his arm and hit me across the face, knocking my head into the pipes that ran down the wall behind me."
Note that he wasn't man enough to challenge Stuart, he had to wait until there was no-one else around and then hit his girlfriend. I guess like most men who hit women, he was a coward.
I live in Sydney, or more precisely a small village on the northern edge of Sydney. My house overlooks a vast area of native forest and one of the things I most enjoy in life is sitting on the balcony on a Saturday morning, eating my bowl of Weetbix and watching the rainbow lorikeets (colourful little birds) playing around in the trees.
Originally I'm from an industrial town in the north of England (not far from Macclesfield, where Ian Curtis comes from). A huge contrast to where I live now!
Congratulations on the end of semester. Have a great Thanksgiving. We don't celebrate it in Australia or England but I could do with a break from work right now, so I'm quite envious! I hope you do post some of your abstract art. Actually there is another Syd web site (Astral Piper) where contributors are strongly encouraged to send their artwork in. I'm not sure if the artwork has to relate specifically to Syd, but in a sense yours does because Syd was very fond of abstract art!! |

Ugh. What a great guy! I have profound respect for the Beatles, what they did musically, all the ground they broke. But I find myself NOT listening to them very much. It was just before my time......which is not a good excuse either because I listen to other stuff from the same period, including Syd's Pink Floyd, Hendrix, the Stones, the Animals, the Byrds, Zappa....etc etc. I guess I am missing that essential gene that makes one a Beatlemaniac.

Wow, you ARE a long way from home! And on the other side of Australia at that. Do you miss England a lot? Do you have plenty of access to good music stores and book stores? Although I depend more on the internet now for music - iTunes is putting everyone out of business.
A few years back, a friend of mine and I would go the Queens of the Stone Age website. They had bulletin boards set up (now deleted, sadly) for each show the band was going to play. My friend and I invaded the "Perth" board and raised all kinds of hell and jokes on the Perth people every day. Most of them joined in the fun, God bless 'em. I actually learned a lot about Perth during that time. But you are way on the other side......of the world!!!

Today is Friday, the countdown on the paper begins. 10 hours left! And here I am on the Syd board. BAD BAD BAD
You know, I've been to that Astral Piper website and its beautiful. But I tried to join and I've never heard anything back on it. I kept reading conversations and wanting to join in but I couldn't. So I stopped going. What's the big deal about joining a message board? I feel like I've put in an application to join the Secret Police or something.
You should take some vacation days from work and take a breather! If you can.
Okay, the BAD ONE is going to be GOOD and work on the paper now! See ya soon! _________________ http://www.planetbrenda.blogspot.com

Brenda, I love reading your postings, but no more until the reasearch paper is finished!!!
Sorry to hear that your experience with Astral Piper was a bit disappointing. I'll have to drop him an e-mail and tell him to get his rear into gear!
As for the Beatles, they were just before my time too. My first memories of pop music were in the seventies. I only got into the Beatles, Stones, Who and Pink Floyd retrospectively.
1960's retro was not a cool thing to be into in the seventies and I got some strange looks from my friends, who were all into David Bowie or Black Sabbath!
But I now think Lennon-McCartney were probably a bit overhyped really. Yeah ok, they wrote some good tunes, but so did the Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Byrds and Pink Floyd (of course).
In fact, some of The Beatles best tunes were written by George Harrison. I love "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something". Poor old George was overshadowed by John and Paul, but I think his songs were just as good. And he wasn't as abrasive as John or as domineering as Paul. Just a nice guy who wrote some nice tunes.
Here's how exciting my Saturday has been. I've just spent the day laying flooring in my attic. I need extra storage space. Originally I hired a carpenter to lay the flooring but the guy let me down at the last minute. So I decided to do it myself. It took me 6 hours to cover an area 6 feet by 12 feet, but that's more than sufficient for my modest storage needs. I feel moderately proud of this achievement and I'm using this pride as an excuse to have a beer.
You are absolutely right about iTunes. Here's my dilemma... I work for a music CD retailer, but at the same time I'm also a terrible iTunes/iPod addict! The more iTunes I download, the more paranoid I get about putting myself out of a job!!
Even as I write this posting, I'm listening to my iPod through one of those little docking thingies with the speakers. "Dakota" by The Stereophonics has just finished playing and I'm now listening to "Oh Honey" by The Audreys. About ten minutes ago, I was treated to the heavenly sound of Syd singing "See Emily Play" and before that "Get Off My Cloud" by the Stones. I have to confess that I even take the docking thingy to work with me and I'm gradually wearing the resistance of my colleagues down and turning them into admirers of the great Mr Barrett.
I'd love to know what jokes you played on the people of Perth! You are reprehensible! Playing tricks on the citizens of Perth AND writing to this forum when you should be finishing your research paper! I think you are truly a rebel. |

PAPER IS FINI! You can read it at my blog:
http://www.planetbrenda.blogspot.com
There's a few weird symbols in the writing where MS Word doesn't translate to Blogger but you'll figure it out.
It was such a relief to walk out knowing that I am DONE! For now! Next semester starts in January - history and literature. I love history and I love literature so I should be full of happiness....but there's a difference in loving it for what it is and being made to do it. But I'm not even going to THINK of school till January!

Do you know the guy? That would be great. I hope to be able to make a contribution to the Syd memorial if indeed it does happen. If it ever inspired one kid to pick up a Syd CD, the whole thing is worth it.
Speaking of Syd and kids, have you ever watched any of this young man's Syd covers?

I'm always checking back to see if he has new stuff up.

I think George had a pure soul too. He was spiritual, he was truly worried about the poor, he was just a special person.

AHA! A DIY kind of guy! Doesn't it feel great to need something and just DO IT. Now all you need is a purple hippopotamus attic latch and then your house will be perfect.

I am worried about the CD industry. Our major US record store chain, Tower Records, just closed down. There are only like 2 more left, FYE and someone else. There is a wonderful mom 'n pop CD store here in my town that I try to visit as often as possible, but I always worry they will close one day....they cater mostly to classical, reggae, jazz and indie fans...no mainstream at all.
And the iPod....oh I love it so much! It never fails to amaze me that I walk around with my ENTIRE Cd collection in the palm of my hand. And still have enough gigs left that I'll probably die before I fill the thing up! (I have a 60 gig)

HA! My friend and I were mad because the bulletin board for our show had already been deleted, so we went to the last date of the QOTSA tour, which just happened to be Perth. We played the "ignorant American we-are-the-center-of-the-universe" stereotype to the max:
"Where on Earth is Perth?"
"Do you have enough electricity there for QOTSA's amps?"
"Will QOTSA be playing in a field?"
"Oh, you have a theater there?? With SEATS?"
"Will Steve Irwin be introducing the band?"
and on and on and on. We tormented them every day, but like I said, most of those good people caught on to us and it just became a big game. The day of the Perth show it was like one big family. Next day, the board was gone forever.
My mission for the rest of the weekend: clean the house, which I have neglected during the end of school rush. After that, prepare for Thanksgiving.....the bird and the paints! _________________ http://www.planetbrenda.blogspot.com

PAPER IS FINI! You can read it at my blog:

There's a few weird symbols in the writing where MS Word doesn't translate to Blogger but you'll figure it out.
It was such a relief to walk out knowing that I am DONE! For now! Next semester starts in January - history and literature. I love history and I love literature so I should be full of happiness....but there's a difference in loving it for what it is and being made to do it. But I'm not even going to THINK of school till January! |
Had a look at your research paper. Suspension of Habeus Corpus is scary stuff. It will be interesting to see whether the U.S. Federal Government retracts the Military Commissions Act when the threat of terrorism subsides. Not while Bush and his croneys are in office. It's in the interest of the present administration to talk up the threat for a long time to come.
It's good to see someone like yourself providing a sensible counterbalance to all the government sponsored hysteria.
Yes, terrorism is a threat, but if we deny essential freedoms to our own citizens then the terrorist have, in effect, won. The best way to show the world that terrorism can never win is to hang on to our freedoms - after all aren't these the values that are supposed to differentiate our society from so-called extremist societies such as Afghanistan under the Taliban? I think we're in danger of letting Al Qaeda win by default.

Sorry to hear that your experience with Astral Piper was a bit disappointing. I'll have to drop him an e-mail and tell him to get his rear into gear!
Do you know the guy? That would be great. I hope to be able to make a contribution to the Syd memorial if indeed it does happen. If it ever inspired one kid to pick up a Syd CD, the whole thing is worth it. |
Astral's real name is Dion Johnson. He lives in Australia apparently. I've swapped e-mails with him a couple of times that's all. If you like, I can drop him an e-mail to let him know that you're interested in joining. I love the Astral Piper web site. Only through that web site did I find out about a Syd Barrett tribute concert in Sydney in January 2007 which I shall definitely be going to!
I know Dion has been planning the memorial to Syd in Cambridge. Maximum respect to the guy. He's even been in touch with Syd's family to gauge their reaction. Apparently they have given their approval. So he's probably been very busy with that and maybe hasn't had much time to administer the Astral Piper web site.
I'll check it out !

| I think George had a pure soul too. He was spiritual, he was truly worried about the poor, he was just a special person. |
He probably embodied the spirit of love and peace more than any of the other Beatles.

| AHA! A DIY kind of guy! Doesn't it feel great to need something and just DO IT. Now all you need is a purple hippopotamus attic latch and then your house will be perfect. |
Lol !! Excellent idea! Now there's a task for me to tackle next weekend!

No mainstream eh? Sounds like heaven. I hope the mom 'n pop business stays in business for many years to come.

Heh heh! Classic stuff! You are hilarious!
I'm sure I once saw a theatre in Perth which actually had seats. Or maybe that was in Adelaide.

Have a great Thanksgiving. You've earned it after completing your research paper. When you tuck into your delicious turkey, spare a thought for the rest of us poor souls slaving away at work!
Mmm.... turkey... (drool).... |

Okay here it is
MOJO magazine, Sept 1996:
"In a private ward at the Adenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where a Barrett Room is named in honor of his late father, the respected pathologist, Syd Barrett lies resting. He is now almost totally blind, following complications arising from diabetes. The prognosis isn't good if he does not routinely take the prescribed insulin, and Barrett seems either incapable or unwilling to do so by himself. Since the death of his mother Winifred in 1991, Syd has often lapsed into diabetic coma, apparently unconcerned about his health. However, he is watched over by a tight network of understanding relatives and neighbors."
Almost blind??? Diabetic comas? I've never come across these things in the stuff I've read before about Syd. What do you think about it? _________________ http://www.planetbrenda.blogspot.com

It wouldn't surprise me!
However, Syd's health must have improved after this Mojo article was written. I've seen many pictures of Syd after 1996, and he looks in reasonably good shape. He certainly doesn't seem to be stumbling around in a state of near-blindness!
One of the pages on the Astral Piper site has some good pictures of Syd at various stages of his life...
http://www.sydbarrett.org/sydslife.htm
I love the picture of Syd riding his bike. And it even has a basket and a bell that rings!
I tried counting Syd's fingers in several of the later photographs, but the results were inconclusive. What I mean is that whilst it's possible he may have still had the full set of five on each hand, the angle or clarity of the photograph leave other possibilities open too. I bet Syd never imagined his digits would ever be scrutinised in such detail by complete strangers! |

I enjoyed that link.
That art museum looks like someplace I would enjoy getting lost in.
I've been reading up on some of the postings here....some of them are so funny! The Syd in Heaven post had me cracking up. On my "Myspace" page I have a picture that says "GOD LISTENS TO SLAYER!" but I think I need to make a new one that says "God has "Interstellar Overdrive" on his iPod!" _________________ http://www.planetbrenda.blogspot.com
